In 1919 the women of the Unruffled dress shop try to rebuild ordinary life after the First World War. Annie waits for news of Sean, who is still missing; Henrietta’s husband has returned with psychological wounds; Maude faces family conflict and a threatening figure from her past; and Edna considers whether age should close or enlarge the possibilities before her.
The shop becomes a place where work, friendship and caregiving hold several households together. Wedding dresses and new designs express hope, but the novel does not ignore bereavement, veterans’ trauma or the instability of postwar business. Christian forgiveness and endurance allow the women to confront loss without pretending that peace immediately repairs what war has broken.
