The Pattern Artist

The Pattern Artist series follows a connected group of seamstresses and designers from an English village to New York’s rapidly changing fashion industry. Pin’s Promise provides the Victorian prehistory; The Pattern Artist and The Fashion Designer trace Annie Wood’s rise from domestic service to creative work and business ownership; The Shop Keepers reunites the women of Unruffled in the difficult aftermath of the First World War.

Fashion is treated as labour, technology and opportunity rather than decoration alone. The women negotiate immigration, class, marriage, entrepreneurship, bereavement and veterans’ trauma while learning to use their talents in service to others. Christian calling and perseverance give the series its organising moral framework.
