John Hancock
1737–1793
Hancock inherited a major mercantile fortune and became prominent in resistance to British customs policy. His ship Liberty was seized in 1768, and he worked closely with Samuel Adams and other Massachusetts leaders during the imperial crisis.
British troops sought Hancock and Adams when they marched towards Lexington in April 1775. Hancock later served as president of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence and became governor of Massachusetts.
