Paul Revere and the Patriot Intelligence Network

As tensions rose in Massachusetts in 1774–1775, patriot committees gathered intelligence about British troop movements and built rapid communication networks linking Boston with surrounding towns. Paul Revere served as a trusted courier and organiser, but he worked within a larger system of printers, artisans, merchants, riders, signals and local contacts.

On the night of 18–19 April 1775, Joseph Warren sent Revere and William Dawes to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that British troops were moving towards Lexington and Concord. Other messengers and signal arrangements spread the alarm, and Samuel Prescott carried the warning onward after Revere was detained by a British patrol. The identity and reliability of some alleged informants, including claims concerning Margaret Kemble Gage, remain debated.
