Johnse Hatfield

Johnson “Johnse” Hatfield was a son of Devil Anse Hatfield whose relationship with Roseanna McCoy became entangled in the Hatfield–McCoy feud. Johnse Hatfield is generally dated to 1862–1922.

Johnse Hatfield, a son of Devil Anse Hatfield, became personally entangled with the McCoy family through his relationship with Roseanna McCoy. He later married Roseanna’s cousin Nancy McCoy, and these relationships became among the most frequently retold personal episodes of the Hatfield–McCoy feud.

In Ann Rinaldi’s The Coffin Quilt, Fanny McCoy grows up along the Tug Fork as distrust between her family and the Hatfields hardens into a feud. She watches Roseanna McCoy fall in love with Johnse Hatfield, a relationship that offers a brief possibility of reconciliation but instead becomes another source of accusation, abandonment and revenge.
