The Sound of Rain

The Sound of Rain sequence links a full-length novel and a companion novella through characters moving between West Virginia and South Carolina in the 1950s. The principal novel follows Judd Markley’s flight from coal mining and his relationship with Larkin Heyward before and after Hurricane Hazel. A Shot at Love returns to West Virginia for Fleeta Brady’s courtship with Hank Chapin, a character connected to the larger story.

Together the works examine mid-century expectations about labour, service and gender. Mining, timber, charitable work, hunting and gunsmithing are not decorative occupations but ways through which the characters understand dignity and independence. Romance succeeds only when it can accommodate vocation rather than replace it, while sudden disaster and inherited family obligations test how freely any individual can choose a new life.
