Yakubu Gowon

Yakubu Gowon was the Nigerian military ruler who led the federal government during the Nigerian Civil War.
Gowon became head of state after the July 1966 counter-coup. His government reorganised the federation into states, rejected Biafran secession and directed the federal war effort before announcing reconciliation after Biafra’s surrender. Chinua Achebe’s There Was a Country discusses this figure within the history and memory of the Biafran conflict.
