Samori Ture

1830–1900

Samori Ture was the founder of the Wassoulou Empire and a major leader of resistance to French conquest in West Africa.

Samori created a disciplined army and mobile state across parts of present-day Guinea, Mali and Côte d’Ivoire. He fought successive French campaigns for more than a decade before his capture in 1898. Thomas Pakenham’s histories place this figure within the political and military events covered by the relevant book.
