Historical person
Calamity Jane
1852–1903
Calamity Jane was an American frontierswoman, performer and storyteller associated with the Black Hills and Deadwood. Her work, drinking, self-created stories and later appearances in western shows made it difficult to separate documented experience from the persona that newspapers and popular culture built around her.
Born Martha Canary, she worked in the American West in occupations that included scouting, freighting and entertainment, and later promoted her own frontier legend through performances and an autobiographical pamphlet whose claims are often difficult to verify.
Hourly History’s Calamity Jane examines the life and self-created legend of Martha Canary, a frontier worker and performer associated with the Black Hills and Deadwood. Hourly History’s Deadwood examines epidemic, fire, crime and commercial consolidation alongside figures such as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
