Bass Reeves
1838–1910
Bass Reeves was a formerly enslaved man who served for decades as a deputy United States marshal in Indian Territory. Known for long-distance patrols and numerous arrests, he worked within the violent federal legal system imposed across the post-Civil War frontier and became one of the most prominent Black lawmen of the American West.
