The Lewis and Clark Expedition recounts the Corps of Discovery’s journey from the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific and back between 1804 and 1806. It explains Thomas Jefferson’s aims, the leadership of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and the crucial assistance of Sacagawea and many Indigenous communities.
The book follows river travel, winter camps, mountain crossings, mapping and scientific observation. It also places the expedition within United States territorial ambition, emphasising that the lands explored were already inhabited, politically organised and connected by extensive Native trade and diplomatic networks.
