Holodomor, 1932–1933

The Holodomor was the catastrophic famine that struck Soviet Ukraine in 1932–1933 during Stalin’s forced collectivisation and grain-procurement campaigns. Requisitions, blacklisting, movement restrictions and punishment of alleged resistance intensified food shortages and mass death.

The famine formed part of a wider Soviet crisis but had a particularly devastating impact in Ukraine, where state policy was intertwined with repression of cultural and political autonomy. Exact mortality estimates and the legal classification of the famine remain subjects of historical debate.
