John Samuel Swire
1825–1898
John Samuel Swire was a British merchant and shipowner who transformed his family firm into a major trading and shipping enterprise in East Asia.
After inheriting the business founded by his father, Swire expanded overseas and established operations in China. Butterfield & Swire opened in Shanghai in 1866 and Hong Kong in 1870, while the China Navigation Company developed steamship services along the China coast and the Yangtze. These ventures laid the foundations of the modern Swire Group.
