Prompted by Stendhal’s unreturned passion for Métilde Dembowski, Love examines how desire begins, intensifies and reshapes the lover’s perception. He develops the idea of “crystallization”: the imagination covers the beloved with ideal qualities, turning hope, doubt and jealousy into a self-sustaining emotional process.
Moving between personal confession, anecdotes, social observation and philosophical argument, Stendhal compares different forms of love and the conventions surrounding courtship, marriage and reputation across European societies. The book is not a conventional narrative, but a deliberately analytical account of infatuation, rejection and the conflict between feeling and self-command.
