Catherine Cookson
Catherine Cookson was an English novelist whose books frequently portrayed working-class life in north-east England. Drawing on the social world of Tyneside and County Durham, she wrote about poverty, illegitimacy, class barriers, family conflict and resilience.
Many of her novels are historical sagas set in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including The Fifteen Streets, The Dwelling Place and The Black Velvet Gown. Her accessible storytelling made her one of Britain’s most widely read popular novelists.
