The Tilly Trotter Trilogy

The Tilly Trotter trilogy follows a young Northumbrian woman whose independence and healing skills make her the target of suspicion in an isolated nineteenth-century community. After violence destroys her remaining security, Tilly enters the household of wealthy mine owner Mark Sopwith and becomes bound to a family divided by class and desire.

The later novels carry her through marriage, widowhood and responsibility for an expanding household. Industrial change and social prejudice shape every stage of Tilly’s life, but the trilogy centres on her ability to survive loss, resist other people’s definitions and create a place for herself.
