James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas

James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas, was a powerful Scottish magnate known as James the Gross. He inherited the leadership of the Black Douglas family after the deaths of his young kinsmen at the Black Dinner of 1440.

His vast estates and influence made the Douglas affinity a near-rival to royal power during the minority of James II. The tension he helped consolidate would erupt more violently under his sons.
