Great Leap Forward and Great Chinese Famine, 1958–1962

The Great Leap Forward sought to accelerate China’s transition to communism through large people’s communes, ambitious grain targets, mass labour projects and backyard steel production. Local officials often exaggerated output while state procurement removed food from communities already struggling with disrupted agriculture.

Crop failure, policy error, coercion and the suppression of accurate reporting produced a nationwide famine. By the early 1960s the most extreme policies were reduced, but rural households had experienced hunger, displacement, family separation and widespread death.
