Looking Glass

Looking Glass was a Nez Perce war leader who became one of the principal commanders during the Nez Perce War of 1877. Initially reluctant to fight, he joined the resistance after United States troops attacked his village.

He helped guide the retreat across the northern Rocky Mountains toward Canada and was killed near Bear Paw shortly before the final surrender. His leadership is remembered within the broader history of forced removal and Indigenous resistance.

In William T. Vollmann’s The Dying Grass, When the crisis becomes war, families and fighters led by figures including Chief Joseph and Looking Glass begin a long retreat from northeast Oregon through Idaho, Yellowstone and Montana, hoping eventually to reach safety across the Canadian border.
