Siege of Leningrad

Axis forces cut the principal land routes into Leningrad in September 1941, beginning a siege that lasted until January 1944. Bombardment, fuel shortages and the collapse of food supplies exposed civilians to starvation and severe winter conditions, while limited transport across Lake Ladoga became essential to evacuation and resupply.

Hundreds of thousands of civilians died, and daily survival depended on ration cards, communal labour, improvised heating and the preservation of family networks under extraordinary pressure. The siege became both a major catastrophe of the Eastern Front and a central element of Soviet wartime memory.
