Eva Braun

Eva Braun was a German photographer’s assistant who became Adolf Hitler’s long-term companion and, during the final hours of their lives, his wife. Born in Munich in 1912, she met Hitler while working for Heinrich Hoffmann, the Nazi Party’s official photographer. Their relationship developed during the early 1930s, but Hitler deliberately kept Braun largely outside his public political image, which presented him as personally devoted to Germany rather than to a conventional family life.

Braun spent long periods within Hitler’s private household, especially at the Berghof near Berchtesgaden, where her photographs and home movies documented leisure, visitors and domestic routines among the Nazi elite. There is little evidence that she exercised political influence, but her privileged lifestyle depended entirely on the dictatorship and insulated her from the suffering it caused. In April 1945 she chose to join Hitler in the Berlin bunker as the Third Reich collapsed. They married on 29 April and killed themselves the following day.

John Boyne’s The Boy at the Top of the Mountain places Eva Braun within the domestic world of Hitler’s Berghof, seen through the gradual corruption of the orphaned Pierrot after he comes to live at the mountain residence. Braun’s presence helps expose the unsettling contrast between the apparently ordinary routines of Hitler’s private household and the murderous regime directed from beyond it.
