June 1144. A naked corpse is discovered near Worcester at the same time that a messenger from the Prince of Powys fails to reach Earl Robert of Gloucester. Bradecote, Catchpoll and Walkelin travel into Wales to confirm whether the dead man is the missing envoy and to reconstruct the journey that ended in murder.
Their inquiries lead to a manor divided among a hostile lord, a neglected wife, a bitter mother and a dangerously ill brother. Evidence suggests that the victim may himself have committed crimes for which the law offered no remedy. The case forces the sheriff’s men to distinguish legal guilt from moral responsibility while political communication across the Welsh Marches remains vulnerable to the wider civil war.
