At twelve, orphaned Will Cooper is sent alone to operate a remote trading post within the Cherokee Nation. He is taken under the protection of the chief called Bear, adopted into the community and drawn into a lifelong relationship with the elusive Claire. The novel’s central figures are fictional, but Will and Bear are loosely shaped by William Holland Thomas and the Cherokee leader Yonaguska.
As Will acquires land, legal knowledge and political influence, he tries to protect Cherokee communities from dispossession and removal. His efforts extend through the Trail of Tears and into the Civil War, when he leads a mixed Cherokee and white force modelled on Thomas’s Legion. The novel is a historical saga about belonging, compromised advocacy and the survival of the Eastern Cherokee amid United States expansion.
