Cheyenne Life on the Great Plains
c. 1700–1890 CE
Cheyenne communities moved westward onto the Great Plains and developed a mobile way of life centred on horses, buffalo hunting, trade and seasonal movement. Family networks, bands, councils and military societies distributed responsibility, while ceremonial life connected social authority with spiritual obligation.
The Cheyenne maintained extensive relations with Lakota, Arapaho and other Plains nations and faced increasing pressure from United States expansion, military campaigns, disease and the destruction of the buffalo herds. Northern and Southern Cheyenne communities experienced these pressures differently and continued to preserve distinct political and cultural identities.
The Canyon draws on a Cheyenne legend to explore a young man’s place within his society rather than attaching the story to a single documented battle.
