Masters of the Sea

The Masters of the Sea trilogy follows Atticus Perennis, a Greek-born captain whose seamanship becomes essential when the Roman Republic attempts to challenge Carthage during the First Punic War. Paired with the Roman centurion Septimus, Atticus must turn soldiers into fighting sailors while navigating a command system in which aristocratic rank, political patronage and prejudice against outsiders often count for more than experience.

Across the trilogy, Rome’s improvised navy advances from vulnerable coastal squadrons to an invasion force capable of carrying the war to North Africa. Fleet actions, boarding battles, catastrophic storms and reversals on land repeatedly place Atticus between duty to his adopted republic and distrust of the men who govern it. The series combines maritime warfare with Roman Senate politics and the struggle between personal merit and inherited status.
