618–907 CE
The Tang Dynasty ruled from 618 to 907 and is often seen as a high point of Chinese imperial culture. Chang’an became a cosmopolitan capital, poetry flourished, and trade connected China to Central Asia and beyond. The dynasty also faced rebellion, frontier pressure and court instability.
It mattered because Tang China combined cultural brilliance with the dangers of imperial overreach. Its cities, monasteries, markets and frontiers offer rich settings for fiction.
