Siege of Kyiv

November–December 1240

Batu Khan’s army reached Kyiv in late 1240 after campaigning through the southern Rus lands. The city was defended under the command of Dmytro on behalf of Prince Daniel of Galicia.

Mongol siege engines breached the walls, and fighting continued through the streets and around the Church of the Tithes. Kyiv fell in December with extensive destruction and loss of life.
