Mongol Invasion of Rus

Armies led by Batu Khan and experienced commanders including Subutai invaded the Rus principalities in 1237. Cities in the north-east were taken in rapid succession before the Mongols turned towards the southern principalities.

Rival Rus rulers were unable to organise a united defence. Siege techniques, mobility and coordinated winter campaigning allowed the invaders to overcome fortified towns and field armies.
